Abstract
The purpose of this study was to assess behavioral characteristics and impressions of social phobics in neutral, cooperative and competitive social interactions. Partners¡¯ impressions of social phobics were also examined. The participants are thirteen individuals who meet DSM-¥³ criteria of social phobia and fourteen non-patients control group who are college students. All subjects were required to complete the Korean version of Social Avoidance and Distress Scale(SADS), Brief Fear of negative Evaluation Scale(BFNE), Social Interaction Anxiety Scale(SIAS), Social Phobia Scale(SPS). The participants were asked to engage in a neutral conversation, a cooperative game, and a competitive game with an experimental confederate who was a stranger of the opposite sex for 5-min each(The experimental confederates consist of one woman and one man and the participants did each game with one of them). After each three interaction, the experimental confederate rated the participant¡¯s interpersonal behaviors using Korean Interpersonal Adjective Scale(KIAS). The participants were independently rated by six raters using KIAS and Social Interaction Role Play. Repeated measures MANOVA analyses were conducted with SPSS 12.0 program. The results were as followings: Those with social phobia exhibited more behaviors of escape/avoidance and submissiveness as well as less confidence and assertiveness than did the normal controls. The partners¡¯ estimates of the social phobics were not different from the ones by the independent raters. The partners noticed that those with social phobia were more passive and less controlling. Findings from this study show that it will be effective against social phobia to reduce safety behavior such as escape/avoidance and submissiveness.
